Australian cycling sensation Matthew Richardson will head into the UCI Track Champions League final rounds within touching distance of the title after again taking it up to sprinting great Harrie Lavreysen.

Dutch star Lavreysen bested Richardson in the sprint final in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines but the Australian turned the tables by claiming his maiden kierin win over the 11-time UCI world champion.

The kierin breakthrough, where Richardson, 23, blasted home on the final bend, came just two weeks after the Commonwealth Games champion’s first sprint win over Lavreysen.

Double Olympic champion Lavreysen leads the sprint standings of the new five-meeting international series on 111 points, just two clear of Richardson (109), heading into next week’s final two rounds in London.

“Harrie and I said to each other in Mallorca in the first sprint round ‘every week baby’ and it’s been every bloody week,” Richardson told Eurosport.

“So it’s been incredible to get to race against the best guys in the world and win some races too.

“Still two more races to go, still all to play for. There’s two points separating me and Harrie.

“I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better sprint tournament. It’s honestly been unreal.

“I came here hoping for a top-five finish and to be up there’s just been surreal.”

The results have set the scene perfectly for the final two rounds of action, taking place back-to-back in London at Lee Valley VeloPark on December 3 and 4.

“I will approach the last rounds in London the same as I have done with all of the other races – make smart decisions and the result is going to be the result,” Richardson said.

“I just need to stick to my processes, and whatever happens, happens. I have just got to be happy with my performances so far.

“If it all goes wrong in the last two rounds, then so be it.

“I’ve had an absolute blast so far so I hope I can carry those vibes on to London.”
