Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong will demand China uses its close relationship with Russia to put an end to the war in Ukraine, saying President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to use military power puts all smaller nations at risk.

“In this pursuit, the world looks to China, a great power, a permanent member of the Security Council, with a ‘no limits partnership’ with Russia,” Senator Wong, will tell United Nations delegates in New York today.

The call follows a “short” but “constructive” meeting with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in New York. She told Mr Wang China had a “special responsibility” to use its influence to end the war, The Australian newspaper reported.

She also used the meeting to urge China to de-escalate tensions with Taiwan and, as well as uphold its commitment to the UN charter of human rights.

An advance copy of her speech shows she will accuse Russia of misusing its Security Council veto to perpetrate “unchecked abuse of the UN charter” and urge medium-sized countries to take more responsibility to counter global instability and avert “catastrophic” conflict due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“We cannot accept a situation where large countries determine the fate of smaller countries,” Senator Wong will say in comments aimed at both Beijing and Moscow.
