Legendary Aussie actor David Gulpilil dies

Legendary First Nations actor and artist David Gulpili has passed away, aged 68, following a four-year battle with lung cancer.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall described the Walkabout film and Storm Boy star as “ one of the greatest artists Australia has ever seen” while announcing his death on Monday night.

“It is with deep sadness that I share with the people of South Australia the passing of an iconic,once-in-a-generation artist who shaped the history of Australian film and Aboriginal representation on screen – David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu (AM),” Mr Marshall said in a statement.

“David Gulpilil was from the Mandhalpingu clan of the Yolŋu people, and was raised in the traditional ways in Arnhem land. In his later years he was a resident of Murray Bridge. He was a brother, son, friend, father, grandfather and husband.

“An actor, dancer, singer and painter, he was also one of the greatest artists Australia has ever seen.”

Hailing from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, Gulpili rose to fame for his breakout role in the 1971 film Walkabout.

In 1987, he was bestowed with Member of the Order of Australian honours.
