High waves may bring debris and surface flooding to roads about the south coast of Wellington and Eastbourne, especially around high tide, MetService says.

The southerly swells could reach 6m this afternoon and are forecast to ease to 5.5m this evening and 4.5m overnight. The swell period about 12 seconds. High tide is at 11.24am and 11.48pm.

MetService has strong wind watches in place for the lower North Island until 10pm and the Marlborough area until 9pm.

Interislander operations manager Peter Matthews says the company’s cancellations will affect about 1000 passengers.

Bluebridge cancelled its early morning sailings on Thursday and said swells were forecast to worsen across today.
