Man charged with DWI after driving on to highschool discipline full of scholars in Nassau County

EAST ROCKAWAY, Nassau County (WABC) — A person has been arrested and charged for allegedly driving drunk into a faculty discipline full of scholars in Nassau County.

Police say Edward Coghlan, 73, first struck one other automobile within the parking zone of a Wendy’s on Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway.

It occurred round 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

When Coghlan drove off, the opposite driver started following him.

Coghlan then crashed his 2004 Lincoln sedan via a steel chain hyperlink fence on the Rhame Avenue Elementary Faculty, drove throughout the sphere, and fled.

Some 80 college students and several other workers members had been on the sphere on the time.

The workers rapidly rushed the scholars again inside the varsity.

Luckily, nobody was injured.

Responding Fourth Precinct Officers had been in a position to find Coughlan as he was driving on West Boulevard and positioned him into custody with out additional incident.

Coghlan is charged with DWI, two counts of felony mischief 4th diploma, reckless endangerment 2nd diploma, and endangering the welfare of a kid.

The East Rockaway Faculty District despatched a letter to oldsters saying:

The person drove throughout the sphere apparently trying to find an exit and eventually exited the sphere. The police have apprehended and arrested the driving force and he will probably be charged.

“I repeat that each one kids are protected and no kids had been harmed. I commend and thank the swift actions of the Rhame Ave. workers who had been current and took motion to guard our college students. We’re grateful for his or her actions.

“Any college students who had been outdoors and will have seen this incident will probably be endorsed and supported by our college workers and college. Thanks to the Fourth Precinct for his or her swift motion in apprehending the person.”
