A bunch representing truck drivers says the federal government must toughen up on harmful drivers, to forestall crashes.
The Street Transport Discussion board says highway enhancements are the primary focus of security efforts, together with rumble strips, median obstacles, and slowing down site visitors. However the primary causes of crashes are dangerous driving and distractions.
Of the 11 individuals killed over the holiday period, 5 weren’t sporting seatbelts.
Discussion board chief govt Nick Leggett stated truck drivers had been held to excessive requirements and there had been huge enhancements in efficiency and security within the business.
He stated none of that mattered if truckies had been sharing the highway with distracted drivers missing the abilities to drive safely.
He advised Morning Report that Waka Kotahi numbers advised “over 90 p.c of the accidents on our roads are attributable to human behaviour”.
Leggett stated the federal government’s $1.four billion spend on highway security upgrades was not working.
“We needs to be investing in individuals, not in roads and onerous surfaces and … upkeep of that. We needs to be investing in individuals, their expertise and competencies.”
As for individuals not sporting seatbelts, he known as it “stupidity”.
